Diet
our rats are fed on a home-made mix based on the Shunamite diet.
http://www.shunamiterats.co.uk/shunamite.shtml
The Shunamite diet is a muesli type mix, which is tailored to a rats needs throughout its life.
The base food we use is Harrisons Banana Brunch or another type or Rabbit Muesli.
We then add in dried dog food, sugar free cereal, dried pasta, herbs and dried veg, dried fruit, mealworms, Barley rings, seeds and various other ingredients to keep it interesting. For my mixes I tend to bulk buy from Ratrations
A lot of people think that feeding rat nuggets is better because it prevents selective feeding but I find that this is one of the worst foods to feed your rat as their main diet, because of the poor quality of ingredients in nuggets it increases the chances of your rat getting tumours.
I feed our rats between 15 - 20g each of dried mix once a day, this is to ensure that all of the dried mix is eaten and nothing gets wasted. I also give the rats a 'starve day' where they don't get any food for the day so this allows them to clean up any food that’s left over, usually before clean out day, this encourages them to clear up the food they may have stashed away.
As well as their dried mix, the rats get any leftovers and fresh fruit and veg.
An example of our current mix (Sept 2016) is listed below. For details on quantity of ingredients please email me.
